London’s Royal Academy Summer Show

Guide to London’s Royal Academy Summer Show

Visit the world’s largest art show this summer. So, if you are staying in Best Western Palm Hotel London, make sure discover an amazing array of artwork by well known and emerging artists.

The Royal Academy Summer Show is not only the world’s largest such exhibition but also the oldest.  It has been running continuously since 1769 – even the World Wars of the twentieth century did not interrupt the show.

Located just off Piccadilly, almost opposite Fortnum & Masons, the Royal Academy is a magnificent building.  The Summer Exhibition has become part of the London social scene and is very much one of the places to go and be seen. You can often spy celebrities browsing the works of art on display – or find art works that they have created.

Occupying several large halls, it covers all types of art including prints, paintings, films, photography, sculpture and architectural models.  Styles cover everything from classical portraits and landscapes to abstract art, installations and graphic art. An animal-themed ‘menagerie’ is set to appear in the Central Hall, while out in the courtyard will be a display of large scale sculptural works.  The exhibition even spills out onto Bond Street with a colourful flag installation by artist Craig-Martin. For art lovers, the Summer Show can be a sensory overload!

Quite simply this is a place to expect the unexpected.  With over 1,200 works of art on display, everyone is guaranteed to find something that they like. Almost all of the artworks are available for purchase, with money raised going to help fund the Royal Academy Art School.

Yet those 1,200 works of art are only a small sample of the sheer number submitted for the exhibition.  Anyone can apply to take part and a massive entry process takes place during the spring each year.  Thousands of art works arrive at the Royal Academy for scrutiny, and decisions are made.  Members of the Royal Academy automatically have the right to participate, and the remainder of the exhibition is open to anyone.

Pick a well-located hotel, like a luxury hotel near Wembley Arena for an easy access to the place. Also, booking tickets in advance is recommended – queues can be quite long.
