Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

If it’s summer time in London, one event always stands out - the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition.  This is one of the highlights of the London summer season – and has been for 248 years!

This is the largest show of its kind in the world and involves both amateur and professional artists. It is also the world oldest open-submission exhibition. Constable, Reynolds and Turner were among the first artists to take part while more recent participants have included Sarah Lucas and Damien Hirst.

Nothing has ever stopped it being held – including war time.  Any artist can apply to take part, submitting up to two pictures for consideration and paying the appropriate fee. For several weeks prior to the exhibition, the committee survey every painting or artwork that has been submitted before deciding which ones to accept.  Paintings, drawings, prints, photography, film, and sculpture are among the many types of media put forward for consideration.

This is what makes the Royal Academy of Arts show so special.  It is completely comprehensive – no matter what your taste in art, you can find something that will appeal. Strolling through the galleries you can find portraits, landscapes, abstracts, flowers and much more.

It is incredibly popular.  Over 12,000 works of art are put forward for inclusion in this Summer Exhibition. The Selection and Hanging Committee carefully considers every single entry.  Just 1,000 works of art are chosen for display in the exhibition.  In addition to those chosen works, every member of the Royal Academy can display six of their own art works, making this a massive exhibition. Traditionally, many of the participating artists walk in procession from Burlington House to St James Church, Piccadilly for a special church service.

Throughout the summer, thousands of travelers staying in some of the finest hotels in north London, pour into the Royal Academy to see this array of art works.  Most also come to buy since every artwork is available for sale.  Over 5,000 works have been sold as a result of their inclusion in the exhibition. It is regarded as a great way to discover new artists and buy works by well known names.

This year, the exhibition spills out into the courtyard. A towering formation of steel ‘clouds’ has to be passed by all the visitors before they climb a series of kaleidoscopic stairs into the Main Galleries where room after room is an explosion of colour, style and vision. Also, there are many tube stations near to the exhibition, meaning the Tube is a viable option if you’re staying at Best western palm hotel and using public transport.

For anyone who likes art – this is undoubtedly one of the most important exhibitions to see in London this summer. So, if you are coming to London for the Art Exhibition, why not extend your stay to a few days or a week? There are Hotels near Wembley Stadium to choose from, which offer a luxury base for your trip.
